- Dr. Classen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy (OT), University of Florida (UF). She received her BA in OT from
the University of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa (1984); a MPH with a concentration in Epidemiology from UF (2004); a PhD
in OT from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, FL (2002); and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at UF (2004). As a recipient of a
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Career Development award (2004-2007), she is developing a health promotion plan for older drivers
in North America. Her research interests center around older driver safety issues, including: identifying the determinants of safe driving,
reduction of crash-related injuries/fatalities, and promoting safe driving and independent community mobility among older adults. She is
also interested in the simultaneous effects of medications, chronic conditions, physical, social, and policy, and vehicle design on the
driving performance of older adults. She instructs and mentors graduate students in the OT and Rehabilitation Science Doctoral Programs, has
authored a book chapter and numerous peer reviewed articles on aging issues, and presented research findings at leading national conferences.

Jerne Shapiro, MPH

Adjunct Instructor
Jerne Shapiro is the Epidemiologist for the Alachua County Health
Department. In 2005, she began teaching as an Adjunct Professor for
the Division of Epidemiology; she currently teaches the Epidemiology
of Infectious Disease course. In 1993, Jerne received a dual BS from
UF in Plant Pathology and Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry.
Prior to graduate school, she spent a year traveling around the globe
where she discovered the wonderful world of public health. After graduating
with her MPH in Communicable and Tropical Health from USF in 2001,
she was accepted into the Florida Epidemic Intelligence Service (FL
EIS). Upon completion of the two-year FL EIS fellowship, she began
work at the Alachua County Health Department as the County Epidemiologist.
In 2005, she graduated from USF Public Health Leadership Institute.
Jerne has led numerous outbreak investigations, maintains infectious
disease surveillance for Alachua County, and coordinates research
projects.

David S. Sheps received his M.D. from the University of North Carolina,
completed his residency in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Hospital and completed a fellowship in cardiology at Yale University
School of Medicine. He has an MSPH in Epidemiology from the University
of North Carolina. Dr. Sheps is Professor and Associate Chair in the
Division of Cardiology at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine
and is a staff cardiologist at the Gainesville VA Medical Center. He is
Director of Nuclear Cardiology at the University of Florida. Effective
January 2002, Dr. Sheps was recognized for his accomplishments in
behavioral medicine by being appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the
Psychosomatic Medicine Journal.
Dr. Sheps is a well-recognized expert in the field of the effects of
psychological stress in patients with coronary artery disease and mental
stress ischemia. He has focused on behavioral, clinical and
epidemiologic manifestations of disease expression, particularly in
coronary artery disease. He currently has two ongoing NIH grants:
Mindful Based Stress Reduction and Myocardial Ischemia, focuses on
treatment of patients with psychological stress induced ischemia to
attempt to see if adverse prognosis of stress induced ischemia can be
altered; Psychological Stress and Risk of Cardiac Events investigates a
broad spectrum of coronary artery disease patients with both nuclear
cardiac imaging and peripheral vascular analysis to more easily detect
the large number currently at risk for adverse events.
